Wor Wednesday #5: The Wizard

Well, the game is called Wizard of Wor. So lets talk about the final boss of a level that you may face: The Wizard.

The Wizard can appear in any level after level 1, though it is insanely rare to see him in level 2, and fairly rare to see him in level 3. Starting on map 4, The Arena, you have a decent chance to encounter him. By the time you’re in the Worlord Dungeons starting at map 8, he will appear almost every time.

The Wizard will only appear at the very end of the map, meaning after the Worluck has either been killed or escapes. Even if you miss the Worluck, killing the Wizard will activate a Double Score Dungeon for the next map.

The Wizard is by far the most difficult and dangerous enemy in the game. He constantly teleports around, and shoots lightning bolts at you. In the early stages you encounter him in, he teleports every few seconds. At higher levels, he teleports insanely quickly, almost once every second, making him extremely difficult to hit.

The Wizard usually starts a small distance away, but will teleport closer and closer to you as time goes on. He can and will eventually appear literally right next to you, which pretty much guarantees an instant death.

In the first 7 dungeons, the best thing to do is – after killing the Worluck – to immediately start heading to a small, defensive position. Get to a tight spot behind a wall, just like when you’re fighting against the monsters. You want to hopefully wait for the Wizard to walk into your line of fire. Meeting him in a long hallway and confronting him directly is a recipe for disaster: he’ll most certainly hit you with a lightning bolt and kill you.

Advanced Wizard positioning is something we’ll cover next Wor Wednesday, and its only applicable in the Worlord Dungeons. While the Wizard can be handled on the first 7 dungeons simply by playing defensively, dealing with him on the extremely open Worlord levels requires very specific strategy.
