Blade does not get nearly enough credit for being one of the first comic book superhero adaptations. Yeah, we had Batman and Superman, but Blade really broke the mold by being bloody, violent, and adult. This opening scene from the movie is perfection.
We get so much from just a few minutes of film here. The vampires are literally hanging out while it’s raining blood – this movie clearly says “I’m not fucking around” right out of the gate. The first time we see Blade, Snipes just exudes badassery. Look at the outfit. The shades. The hair. The guy is just awesome as hell, and he still looks great today.
The fight scene itself is excellent. We get some guns, some fists, and knives, some gadgets. We as the audience get to learn so much in just a few minutes, and all with almost no dialogue. This level of visual storytelling is something that I think most modern action movies completely fail at.
Snipes looks top notch as always, and just like the matrix (which we talked about yesterday), we dont need any shakycam to cover up lackluster actor ability. It’s well shot and clean as hell. The special effects also still look nice today, and the “crumbling” effect that happens as the vampires turn into ash holds up.
The only thing left to say is that everyone who ever heard the song playing at the club – its called Confusion by the way – has that song permanently banned in their brain.
