Kill Bill is full of great fights, but this one is actually my favorite. It’s about 2:30 long, but man, Tarintino really knows how to direct good action.
The actresses here both do an incredible job, so like the past few days, we again have no need to shakycam this scene. And thank god. I don’t think Tarintino would ever resort to a cheap trick like that – the guy loves movies, and he wanted to show the action and what these characters can do.
The action is fast and brutal, with both characters taking massive bumps over and over. Everyone is cut up and bleeding. Furniture is getting destroyed left and right. Luckily, Tarintino does an incredible job with framing this fight. We can always tell where the characters are in the room and their relation to the other objects. The action isnt shot from too close, and we can appreciate the athleticism here. All the little shots here really add to the tension, like the closeup cut to Vernita’s feet sliding across the glass, kicking a small obstacle out of her way.
And yet again, we get awesome in-fight storytelling. Vernita Green’s expression quickly shifting from kill mode into helplessness when she sees her daughter get home is a wonderful moment.
There is so much crammed into this very short fight, but damn if it isnt my favorite in the entire film.
