While we’re on the subject of amazing metal videogame OSTs, we can’t possibly go on without mentioning DOOM.
DOOM 2016 is a masterpiece. The soundtrack, done by the inimitable Austrilian composer Mick Gordon, kicks your teeth in from start to finish.
Just like the original Doom games, from which he drew heavy inspiration, it’s a fusion of metal and industrial electronic music. It’s truly pushed to the limit here, with insanely detuned 7 and 8 string guitars growling underneath perfectly fitted mechanical screeches.
The drums are underrated on this OST, as much of the praise focuses on the guitar work and brutal melodies, but man do the drums absolutely kick ass. The use of giant, echoing, subsonic THUMPS to emphasize key musical shifts fits perfectly under the tight kick sound, and just adds even more explosiveness to the already furious soundtrack.
